"Your commitment to safety and public health has been outstanding and data collected by this survey will demonstrate that...and inform national and state strategies to operate schools."

- Blaine Henningsen, Ed.D., Assistant Commissioner, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

Frequently Asked Questions. And Answers.

How were the schools selected?
All Missouri schools were selected to participate.  In other states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's contractor (ICF, Inc.) is selecting a 30% random sample of schools.

How long does it take to complete the survey?
About 22 minutes.  pdf formats of the survey under the online survey links at the top of this webpage.

Will my responses be kept confidential?
Yes. Respondents are never identified either as individuals or by school name.

Is the survey completed online?
Yes.  The online system is the only way to complete the survey.  If you prefer to download and complete a printed copy, send it to info@mohealthyschools.com.

Is participation voluntary?
Yes. Participation is voluntary.

When is the survey conducted?
Data collection occurs during March and April 2021.

Who completes the survey?
The survey should be completed by the person with the most knowledge of the school’s COVID-19 response policies and activities. The superintendent and principal generally determines the best person to respond for the district or school.  In many cases, school nurses have the most knowledge about COVID-19 response policies and activities.

What happens with the data collected?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention uses the data from multiple states to inform planning and development of interventions to improve health. Similarly, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services analyze the data and prepare reports for many stakeholders.

Missouri Healthy Schools Successful Students

The National and State Survey of School Response to COVID-19  project is affiliated with the Missouri Healthy Schools Successful Students, a statewide initiative to provide Missouri students with lifelong advantages built upon early, positive health behaviors that improve conditions for academic achievement.  It bolsters infrastructure, knowledge and healthy behaviors in Missouri schools by providing targeted training to school professionals; promote and implement school-wide policies that reduce access to unhealthy foods; encourage increased physical activity; and provide targeted health and wellness education that will allow students to more effectively manage chronic health conditions – before, during and after the school day. Missouri Healthy Schools Successful Students is built upon the national Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model.

Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model

The  National and State Survey of School Response to COVID-19  supports statewide adoption of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model.  The WSCC Model highlights the school health components which every school should have to ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of their students, staff and environment.  The focus of the WSCC model is an ecological approach that is directed at the whole school, with the school in turn drawing its resources and influences from the whole community and serving to address the needs of the whole child.  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages use of the model as a framework for improving students' learning and health in our nation's schools. Click here for more information about the WSCC model or contact Laura Beckmann for training and professional development opportunities available from Missouri Healthy Schools Successful Students.
