Books, Backpacks and Water Bottles: How One Tennessee School District is Making It Easier for Students to Stay Hydrated
>> Main topics: Bringing water bottles on campus and into classrooms just got a lot easier in Hamilton County, Tennessee as the Board of Education recently voted in favor of installing water bottle filling stations in all newly constructed or majorly renovated schools.“Unlike water fountains, which require users to put their mouths close to the water dispenser, water bottle filling stations allow users to fill their personal bottles and stay hydrated on-the-go,” said Durm-Minoux. “As we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important we encourage better policies that benefit the health and well-being of our students, and one way we can do that is by installing water bottle filling stations to help reduce the spread of germs and disease.”
Hamilton County is the first school district in the state of Tennessee and only second in the southeastern region of the U.S. to pass this important policy.

New 3Ts Factsheets on Ensuring Drinking Water Quality in Schools/Child Cares During and After Extended Closures
>> Main topics: US EPA announced the publication of two factsheets:
1) Ensuring Drinking Water Quality in Schools During and After Extended Closures
2) Ensuring Drinking Water Quality in Child Care Facilities During and After Extended Closures.
These factsheets provide guidance on maintaining drinking water quality during extended closures and recommends start-up procedures when reopening to ensure that drinking water is safe for consumption. The factsheets are part of the EPA 3Ts for Reducing Lead in Drinking Water in Schools and Child Care Facilities (3Ts) ToolKit. The School factsheet includes information for schools that are served by or are public water systems (PWSs). The Child Care factsheet is intended for facilities specializing in early care and education programs, including center-based and family child care homes, pre-kindergarten programs as well as Head Start and Early Head Start Programs. Additional considerations are included for child care facilities that are non-community water systems (NCWSs), and child care facilities served by a private well.
